Bee City Canada

Our Community Foundation is proud to be the first community foundation in Canada to be designated through Bee City Canada, as well as the first Bee Partner in the Municipality of Trent Hills, and the first in Northumberland County.

In 2019 the community foundation provided grant funding to the Campbellford Incredible Edibles Festival, to promote the importance of pollinators at their annual festival, which takes place in July. One of the founders of the festival approached the Municipality about applying to Bee City Canada to become designated as a Bee Community, and this was approved by Council in the fall of 2019. The Municipality of Trent Hills is the first Bee City Community in Northumberland County and the 35th in Canada.St. Mary School Pollinator Garden

The Community Foundation then provided the Bee City Canada information to the Campbellford area schools, and all four have successfully applied, and been designated as Bee Schools. Kent Public School, Hillcrest Public School, St. Mary Catholic Elementary School and Campbellford District High School have all committed to protecting pollinators and their habitat. The Community Foundation has provided grant funding to all these schools over the years for pollinator friendly projects - everything from planting pollinator gardens, a food forest garden, and shade trees.

The Bee City Canada program consists of three commitments, with indicated actions to support these commitments:

  1. Creating Healthy Pollinator Habitat - create, improve and maintain pollinator habitat while reducing or eliminating pesticide use.
  2. Educating about Pollinators - educate community members about the importance of pollinators.
  3. Celebrating Pollinators - celebrate pollinators during International Pollinator Week (third week of June) or at other times.

A committee of the Community Foundation, the Environmental Stewards, will take on the Bee City Canada commitments, and partner with the Municipality and the schools to protect pollinators.
