The Campbellford/Seymour Community Foundation was the recipient of a gift of $636,376.71 from the Estate of Bernard Murphy in 2021. Through a bequest in his Last Will and Testament, the Cyril, Anne and Bernard Murphy Scholarship Fund has been created to support graduating students attending one of the two Cobourg high schools – Cobourg Collegiate Institute and St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School.
Starting in 2022, an annual award will be presented to one student from each Cobourg high school who is enrolled and accepted in a full-time Canadian post-secondary education program in the area of arts, science, medical or theatre/drama. The students will be chosen annually by each school’s administration. The initial scholarship amount of $2,000 is to be adjusted for inflation at 2% per annum starting from 2010, so the 2022 recipients will receive over $2,500 each.
This gift exemplifies Bernard’s generous spirit and his wish to ensure that the causes he valued in life continue to receive support long after he is gone. Young people are the future of our communities, and investing in our youth ensures that they succeed and thrive, and become self-sufficient, productive and the best versions of themselves.
His gift, named in memory of his parents, Cyril and Anne, will continue to provide generous support of the educational endeavors of local students and will be a lasting legacy.
Scholarships reward students hard work, recognize need and support dreams.
